What It Means

A beneficiary is the person or entity that receives a payment. In banking, the term specifically refers to the account holder who will receive funds in a wire transfer or other bank-to-bank transaction. The beneficiary is identified by their name combined with account details such as an IBAN or account number.

How It Works

When initiating a payment, the sender provides the beneficiary's name, bank account details, and the beneficiary's bank identifier (such as a SWIFT/BIC code for international transfers). The sending bank uses this information to route the payment through the appropriate clearing system to the beneficiary's bank, which then credits the beneficiary's account. In some cases, remittance information is included so the beneficiary can match the payment to an invoice or order.

Why It Matters

Accurate beneficiary details are critical for successful payment delivery. A mismatch between the beneficiary name and the account details can result in delays, returned payments, or funds reaching the wrong person. For international wire transfers, specifying the correct beneficiary bank via its SWIFT code is equally important to avoid costly intermediary bank fees.
