How are IBAN check digits calculated?

IBAN check digits are computed using the MOD-97 algorithm defined in ISO 7064. The process: (1) assemble the BBAN (domestic bank details), (2) prepend the country code and "00" as placeholder check digits, (3) move the first 4 characters to the end, (4) convert all letters to numbers (A=10, B=11, … Z=35), (5) compute the remainder when dividing by 97, (6) subtract from 98 to get the check digits. This algorithm catches over 99% of transcription errors.

Is this IBAN generator safe to use?

Yes. All computation runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript — your bank details are never sent to any server, logged, or stored.
