MT103

SWIFT MT103 Payment Message

What It Means

An MT103 is a standardized SWIFT payment message used for single customer credit transfers. It is the most widely used message type for international wire transfers and serves as proof that a payment has been initiated. The "MT" stands for Message Type, and 103 is the specific code for customer payments.

How It Works

The MT103 message contains structured fields including the sender and receiver BIC codes, the transaction amount and currency, the ordering customer and beneficiary details, and remittance information describing the purpose of the payment. Key fields include Field 20 (transaction reference), Field 32A (value date and amount), and Field 71A (charges code specifying who pays the fees, such as OUR, BEN, or SHA). The message travels from the ordering bank through the SWIFT network to the beneficiary bank, possibly via intermediary banks.

Why It Matters

The MT103 is the definitive record of an international payment and is often required as proof of payment for trade, legal, and regulatory purposes. If a payment is delayed or missing, your bank can use the MT103 reference to trace the transfer through the correspondent banking chain. As the industry migrates to ISO 20022 (MX messages), MT103 remains the dominant format with billions of messages sent annually.
