IBAN & SEPA

SEPA

Single Euro Payments Area

What It Means

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a payment integration initiative that harmonizes euro-denominated bank transfers across 36 European countries. Within SEPA, a euro payment to another country is treated the same as a domestic transfer — same rules, same timelines, same pricing. All SEPA transactions require an IBAN as the account identifier.

How It Works

SEPA defines three core payment schemes: SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) for push payments, SEPA Direct Debit (SDD) for pull payments, and SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) for real-time transfers. These schemes are governed by the European Payments Council and enforced by EU regulation. Banks participating in SEPA must accept IBANs from any member country without discrimination.

Why It Matters

SEPA eliminated the fragmented landscape of national payment systems in Europe, making cross-border euro payments as simple and inexpensive as domestic ones. For businesses operating across Europe, it means a single bank account can receive payments from customers in any SEPA country. Ensuring IBANs are valid before initiating a SEPA transfer prevents rejections and delays.
