Bankers' Automated Clearing Services
BACS (Bankers' Automated Clearing Services) is the UK payment system responsible for processing Direct Debits and bank-to-bank credit transfers. Operated by sort code-based routing, it handles billions of transactions each year, including salary payments, supplier invoices, and utility bills.
Payments submitted through BACS follow a three-day processing cycle: Day 1 is input (the file is submitted), Day 2 is processing (banks validate and reconcile), and Day 3 is settlement (funds move between accounts). Each transaction references a six-digit sort code and an eight-digit account number. BACS supports both Direct Debit collections (pull payments) and BACS Direct Credit (push payments such as payroll).
BACS is the backbone of recurring payments in the UK, processing over 4 billion transactions annually. For businesses, it provides a low-cost, reliable channel for bulk payments like wages and standing orders. Understanding BACS processing timelines is essential for cash-flow planning, since payments are not instant like Faster Payments.
