BankCheck checks whether a number could be valid based on format, length, and checksum rules. It does not verify that an account exists or confirm who it belongs to. Always confirm account details with your bank before making a payment.

UK Direct Debit Scheme

What It Means

A UK Direct Debit is an authorization you give to a company (the payee) allowing them to collect payments directly from your bank account. Unlike a standing order, the payee controls the timing and amount of each collection, making Direct Debits ideal for bills that vary from month to month.

How It Works

You sign a Direct Debit Instruction (DDI) giving the payee permission to collect from your account. The payee submits collection requests through BACS, which processes them over a three-day cycle. All UK Direct Debits are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee, which entitles you to an immediate full refund from your bank if a payment is collected in error. The payee must notify you of any changes to the amount or date in advance.

Why It Matters

Direct Debits power the majority of recurring bill payments in the UK, from utility bills to subscriptions. The Direct Debit Guarantee makes them one of the safest payment methods for consumers. In Europe, a similar pull-payment mechanism exists under the SEPA Direct Debit scheme, which uses IBANs instead of sort codes and account numbers.
