SCT Inst

SEPA Instant Credit Transfer

What It Means

SEPA Instant Credit Transfer (SCT Inst) is the real-time variant of the standard SEPA credit transfer. It enables euro payments to be completed in under ten seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year — including weekends and public holidays. Funds are immediately available to the beneficiary upon settlement.

How It Works

The payer's bank sends a credit transfer message to the beneficiary's bank through a clearing mechanism that operates in real time (such as TIPS or RT1). The entire process — validation, clearing, and settlement — must complete within ten seconds. If any step fails, the transaction is rejected and the payer is notified immediately. The current maximum amount per transaction is 100,000 euros, though the European Payments Council reviews this limit periodically.

Why It Matters

SCT Inst brings European bank transfers in line with the speed consumers expect from real-time payment systems worldwide. The EU has mandated that all SEPA banks must offer instant transfers, making it the new baseline for euro payments. For businesses, this means faster cash flow, immediate confirmation of payment, and the ability to offer instant checkout experiences without relying on card networks.
